"I lost weight so fast, I thought I had parasites!"

My first big lesson in the power of sugar came when I had mysteriously lost about 20 pounds in only a few months. To my knowledge, I had literally done nothing to lose it. I hadn't cut out fat from my diet, as much as I had tried, because isn't that what you are supposed to do? And I hadn't started any exercise routine whatsoever. I was working almost 70 hours a week at the time; who has time for that?

. . . I was pretty certain I had parasites.

So I went to the doctor. You see, my M.D. had recently told me I needed to cut back on sugar and lose weight because I was dangerously close to or pretty much living in "pre-diabetes" status. The doctor didn't tell me how to do it, she just told me to do it.

Sound familiar?

So I decided to cut out the most sugar-laden thing I could: soda. And boy, did I consume a lot of it. But I had no idea there was a connection between sugar consumption and weight gain, otherwise I wouldn't have embarrassed myself when I shared my riveting parasite theory with her. She was instantly skeptical, and I don't blame her.

She carefully asked me questions about my lifestyle until she found out I had cut out soda and replaced it with black coffee (I had to find some way to make it through my graveyard shifts!), she laughed, which was a little confusing, and then she did the math with me to help illustrate that the absence of all that sugar I had been consuming was allowing me to lose weight, because (as she educated me) my insulin wasn't spiking as often and as much anymore. And insulin is the storage hormone.

Sugar = fat? Mind. Blown.

I have tried and tried to recall, but I do not remember anyone saying anything bad about sugar other than "it rots your teeth" for my entire life; Not in health class, not anywhere. As we know now, the sugar industry is akin to the tobacco industry in its methods of masterful manipulation and deceit, but I digress.

And I also didn't realize, (as I was to learn shortly after this conversation as I rushed out and bought books to learn about this phenomenon), that sugar isn't just that sweet white stuff I put in my homemade cookies or enjoyed in a soda, but that almost all of the foods I was eating were filled with processed carbohydrates that were breaking down into sugar and doing the exact same thing to my body that the soda had done!

The power of sugar is real. And it does far worse things to the human body than cause some people to gain and hold onto fat.

FAQs

What about hunger?

There is no counting of calories or macros or limits on how much you eat. This program is about teaching you how to eat nutrient-dense foods that actually give you the nutrients your body needs, and stabilizes blood sugar so you won't have the hunger you've had in previous "diets".

Will the food be bland salads & health-food?

No, I guarantee eating nutrient-dense, whole foods, with plenty of delicious, quality fats is going to be delicious! AND I will be handing out the RESTART cookbook to all of you on the first day as well as arming you with meal preparation strategies and my own favorite recipes that will be convenient to eat. You will have no shortage of yummy ideas. #butseriouslyilovesaladsnow

Isn't healthy food more expensive?

Well, I think we all know that making your own food is less expensive than eating out. It's true that organic, grass-fed foods are a little more expensive, but you will learn how much that investment will pay you back in dividends when it comes to your health and wellness. It's why I get the cheapest health insurance: I invest in good quality foods and exercise regularly . . . and save my money.

Can I do this program if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Absolutely. A nutrient-dense, whole foods diet is perfect for replenishing your body of depleted nutrients as well as supplying high quality nutrients to your baby. If you're suffering from excessive fatigue, it is likely you are not keeping up with your nutrient needs, and this will be a perfect way to get back on track.

I've tried to eat healthy before, and I just had terrible cravings and bad moods.

Were you eating enough fat? :) Probably not.

Were you eating enough food? :) Probably not.

How was your blood sugar and digestion? Did anyone give you advice on specific types of food or supplements to help with cravings?

Cravings and bad moods come from nutrient deficiencies and dysfunction that only nutrients can truly heal. That's what this program is aimed at doing, without the starvation and low-fat nonsense.

What if I Miss a Class?

It's really best not to miss a class, but if you miss one, I can go over the material with you briefly separately.

What if I Have to Stop Coming to Class?

If you have to stop part of the way through the course, you can join another class starting at a later date. I won't do refunds in this case.

What if I Don't Improve?

Well, I can't guarantee any one specific outcome, because everyone's body is different, but I absolutely CAN guarantee you will see improvements in at least one of the following categories:

  • Weight

  • Energy

  • Focus

  • Mood

  • Digestion

  • Elimination

I seriously guarantee it; Money-back guarantee it.

As long as you go to every class and follow the sugar detox plan, I will give you all of your money back if you don't see some kind of improvement. I am THAT confident.

***AND if you don't see any improvement, I will give you a free 1-on-1 nutritional therapy consultation because I will be so intrigued and flabbergasted that I WILL WANT TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!

But What About This Other Thing I Could Do Instead . . .

  • Do a sugar detox on your own:

    • Definitely doable, but why haven’t you done it yet? Are you too busy and focused on other things to spend the time doing the research and planning yourself? Will you do the reading to get the knowledge of how to do it correctly, and learn what foods or supplements might help you quell the cravings? Or do you tend to be the kind of person that benefits from support and accountability to be able to follow through on diet changes?

  • Sign up for one of those “weight loss” programs:

    • This is the most common approach, and I understand why! They promise that sexy, toned body, right?! Almost everyone gets into nutrition because first and foremost, we want to “lose weight” and look great naked. I know I did! But now I know that traditional methods of weight loss go about it the wrong way; they don't target WHY we have gained weight (what dysfunction in our bodies is causing it) and they don't focus on actual nutrition.

    • I hate to bash, but I’m just going to be honest with what I have seen: these programs are usually focused on measuring success by your weight and try to change that number by obsessively counting calories consumed and calories burned or macro ratios. They usually have a “calories in, calories out” mentality that just doesn’t live up to the science anymore. Different foods affect your body differently.

    • Okay, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they care about the quality of foods you eat and educate you on how each nutrient contributes to your blood sugar balance, your digestion, your energy and mood, and your overall health, but I tend to think that’s a pretty big ask. #donthateme #youknowitstrue

  • Join a forum or Facebook group for support & accountability:

    • True, you will probably be able to get support and accountability in an online group, but the level of education and experience of the people giving you advice might not be of the best quality, who knows? You will get advice from all over the board. How will you know which advice to follow and which advice to ignore?

    • Also, I am hoping there are certified, educated nutrition professionals that are aware of the science. Will they have your longterm, foundational health in mind, or will they be focused on selling you on a “quick fix” program of their own? If there are awesome nutrition professionals there to help, will you have weekly access to learn directly from them and be able to ask questions and get quality feedback on the fly?

  • Get a diet coach:

    • Awesome! And expensive! :( Why not spend less to learn the basics with this class, test it out, and see if you can figure out what works best for you and not have to keep paying an expensive diet coach forever to keep your results? Besides, you'll get coaching not just from a nutritional therapy practitioner, but from other people going through the exact same thing as YOU.

SERIOUSLY, REAL FOOD WORKS!

This 5 week program is so powerful because it addresses all of the roadblocks people face when trying to make a real change in their eating habits:

  • Detox: Get a fresh start! Together (yes, I am doing it too!) we do a 3 week sugar detox where you will reset your palate and relearn to appreciate the natural sweetness and tastes in real foods.

  • Accountability: You will have weekly check-ins with a certified nutritionist AND be part of a group of people going through the same things along with you!

  • Sustainability: The way of eating I teach you in this program is 100% sustainable for life and I’ll be giving you the tools to MAKE it fit, including a fabulous cookbook.

  • Have a Plan: All the planning is done for you, and all the tools to follow through with the plan are provided.

  • Educate Yourself: Through this program you learn about how to eat, how to have great digestion, the truth about fats, and how blood sugar regulation really works.

  • Set Goals & Dreams: We will be going through the exercise to find your “why”.
